GASTEIN CONVENTION DE (1865)

Signée le 14 août 1865, la convention de Gastein devait régler le statut des duchés de Lauenburg, de Schleswig et du Holstein, enlevés au Danemark à la suite de la guerre de 1864 menée par la Prusse et l’Autriche au nom de la Confédération germanique. Le rattachement de ces duchés à la Confédération constituait une revendication du mouvement national allemand depuis 1848. Le règlement de Gastein (le Lauenburg restait attribué à la Prusse, avec Kiel, le Schleswig administré par elle, et le Holstein par l’Autriche), par-delà le problème local, intéressait la question de l’unité allemande: la Prusse en prendrait-elle la tête, seule, ou l’Autriche et la Prusse assureraient-elles ensemble la direction d’une grande Allemagne? L’accord de Gastein, en fait défavorable à l’Autriche, était-il une dernière tentative de la part de Bismarck pour éviter le conflit avec Vienne ou une simple étape, qui avait l’avantage de déconsidérer l’Autriche vis-à-vis des petites puissances allemandes en prouvant son égoïsme?
